Abstract

990,884. Winches on vehicles; reels. RIBBLESDALE MOTORS Ltd. Sept. 17, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962], No. 30484/62. Headings B8B and B8M. A winch drum designed for attachment to a vehicle road wheel has an outer cable-retaining flange consisting of a rim 15 and radial strips 14. These strips extend axially over the drum and some of them are further extended to provide lugs 16 to allow attachment of the drum to a wheel by means of the latters wheel nuts. The lugs provided correspond in position to only some (in the case illustrated three of the five) of these nuts, so that the wheel need not be completely detached from its hub when attaching the drum. Fig. 5 depicts two such drums in use in a system for releasing the vehicle from a boggy or like situation in which it has lost traction.
