Abstract

990,568. Topping root-crops. J. M. REEKIE. May 15, 1961 [May 13, 1960; March 25, 1961], Nos. 16947/60 and 10983/61. Heading A1F. A root-crop topping machine includes a cutter 1 floatingly mounted in a chassis 2 which is towed over the crop-row, the cutter being rotatable about a horizontal transverse axis 4 and being arranged to co-operate with feelers 7, there being a second cutter 8 preceding the first and also rotatable about a horizontal transverse axis 10. As shown, the first cutter is a milling drum with circumferential blades 12 carried by discs 5, the feelers being a set of arcuate rods concentric with the drum. The second cutter comprises radial blades 9 rotating within a casing 11. Either or both cutters may comprise flails.
