A nuclear fuel element is provided with helical fins 3 and longitudinal partitions 4, and heat transfer is increased at desired points by additional short partitions 5; in particular partitions 5 are mounted at the upstream end of the element to avoid high temperatures caused by a local reduction of the efficiency of heat transfer to the coolant. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 847, 214.
