A nuclear fuel element can has helical fins 11 which vary in height, for example as shown by line 10c, in order to vary the local heat transfer coefficient along the can. Splitter fins 12 may be supported by circumferential brace members, adjacent and downstream of which the height of the helical fins is increased. Specification 856,740 is referred to.
