A chain saw bar assembly comprises a groove 3 to receive the drive links 10 of the chain and longitudinal edges 14 to support the side links 15, 16 of the chain, and a free-end idler wheel 6 having teeth 19 with inclined edges 22, 23 to supportingly co-operate with the drive links, the teeth being of sufficient depth to leave a space 24 between the bottom of the teeth and the innermost parts 25 of the drive links so that the chain is supported radially of the idler wheel solely by the inclined edges. The bar has a centre plate 2 between two side plates 1 to form the groove 3, edges 14 and a recess 5 for the idler wheel. A hub 8 is secured by rivets or bolts 7 to the side plates and serves as the centre member for balls or rollers 9 supporting the idler wheel. The side links have edges 17 which contact the edge 14 of the bar at their ends, the middle of the links being spaced from the edge 14. The side links are lifted away from the end part 18 of the side plates by the inclined surfaces 22, 23 of the teeth 19 of the idler wheel engaging the inclined surfaces 20, 21 on the drive links, which surfaces may be straight or curved. The inner surfaces 12 of the drive links act to clean out sawdust from the spaces 24 between the teeth 19 and from the groove 3.
