[Also in Division B3] A method of cleaning a rotating work roll includes the step of contacting the surface of the work roll by at least one wiper roll having recesses in its surface. Wiper rolls 25 clean the surface of work rolls 21 of a rolling mill, any dirt or scale on the work rolls being collected by helical grooves 29 in the rolls 25. Suction is applied to the grooves via a central bore 25<SP>1</SP> and radial bores 29<SP>1</SP> to remove the dirt. The bores are not, however, necessary since the grooves move dirt axially of the work rolls. A single, or multiple helices may be used, or helices of opposite hand extending from the centre of each roll may be employed.
