Apparatus for impregnating a web 12 of textile material with a liquid comprises a container 8 for the liquid 9, a hollow drum 1 having a plurality of perforations 2 in the side wall thereof and being unperforated in the end walls thereof, rigidly fixed within the container 8, means for applying a suction pressure to the drum 1, moans for passing all of the web 12 around the drum 1 across the perforations 2 whereby liquid is drawn through all the web 12 as it passes across the perforations 2 and conveying means 6 for the web 12 disposed around the side wall of the drum 1 so that the web 12 is spaced from this side wall during at least a major portion of its passage therearound. In one embodiment, Figs. 1 and 2, the conveying means 6 comprises rotatable rollers mounted on flanges 5 at the ends of the drum 1. The perforated drum 1 is mounted on a perforated mandrel 3 connected at each end thereof to a suction pump. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5, the rollers 6 are mounted in recesses 13 in the periphery of the drum 1 which recesses have unperforated surfaces. Also, the portion 14, Fig. 4 (not shown), of the drum 1 around which the web 12 does not pass is unperforated. The drum 1 is rigidly mounted in the container 8 by a sleeve 15 on each end wall thereof. A replaceable mandrel 16 having two parts connected by a screw joint 18 is inserted in the sleeves 15. Discs 19 divide the drum into sealed compartments 20 and mandrels having different widths of perforations are used to enable treatment of different width webs. In a further embodiment, Figs. 7 and 8, the conveying means comprises a shell 24 surrounding a driven, hollow drum 20 rotatably mounted on the sleeves 15 to surround the drum 1. The shell 24 is movable to any one of a number of positions and held there by a spring loaded ball 25 engaging a socket 26. Liquid seal members each comprising a blade 22 urged into contact with a cylinder 21 by a spring 23 are provided adjacent the points at which the web 12 contacts and leaves the surface of the shell 24. Different size perforations may be formed in the drum 20 and the shell 24 and cooperate for different positions of the shell to enable different width webs to be treated. The web is driven slightly faster than the peripheral speed of the drum 20.
