In a tank consisting of inner and outer plastic casings 1, 2 separated by a layer of porous material 7 means are provided for detecting the escape of material from the tank into the porous layer. The layers 1, 2 may be made from a glass-reinforced epoxy resin whilst the layer 7 comprises a plastic foam or hessian impregnated with an oil-resistant synthetic rubber or plastic. The tank may incorporate a probe which in the presence of liquid electrically actuates an indicator or two sampling pipes 5, 6 through which air is drawn and fed to a detector. Again, vacuum or pressure may be applied continuously or intermittently to the space between the layers 1, 2. A sump 3 having a withdrawal pivot 4 is also provided.
