Abstract

<FORM:0989532/C2/1> <FORM:0989532/C2/2> <FORM:0989532/C2/3> Lactulitol, assigned Formula II, is incorporated in infant foods containing lactose, together with lactitol (Formula I) if desired. Lactulitol may be obtained by the treatment of lactulose (Formula III) solution at 90 DEG C. maximum with hydrogen at 120 at. pressure in the presence of a Raney nickel catalyst.ALSO:A pure bifidus flora in the intestinal tract of infants is encouraged by adding lactitol and/or lactulitol to lactose-containing food, exemplified by pasteurized whole milk of 3.8% fat containing boiled water and lactose, there being added 0.5-3g. of lactitol, 0.2-2g. of laculitol, or pro rata in a mixture of the two, to that weight of food of 70 Calories calorific value, and the food having a lactose/protein weight ratio of 2.0-8. The structures assigned to lactulose, lactitol and lactulitol are set out; the production of lactitol from lactose and of laculitol from lactulose are described.
