Abstract

989,334. Cooling internal combustion engines. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1964, No. 7914/64. Heading F4U. In a liquid cooling system for an I.C. engine a radiator is provided with an integral or remote header tank and an air space is provided above the level of the coolant in the header tank, a valve arrangement allowing fluid to escape from the header tank to an overflow tank when the water boils and to return to the header tank on cooling, so that the volume of the air space remains substantially constant. The air space may either be formed around the neck 7 extending down into the header tank or may be enclosed in a sealed tank, water at the bottom of the sealed tank being connected by a syphon to the header. The size of the air space is chosen so that when the water has reached the pressure which will open the valve 5 its temperature is at the boiling point for this pressure. Spring-loaded valves 5 and 6 allow fluid escape from and return to the radiator respectively. The overflow tank 9 may be made of transparent plastics material.
