Abstract
988,763. Tamping plugs. COREPLUGS Ltd. March 13, 1964 [March 13, 1963], No. 9876/63. Heading F3A. Tamping plugs 10 comprising sand bonded with sodium silicate are formed in a mould. The resultant cylinders are then heated in a kiln to a temperature of about 250‹ C., so that the outer layer of each plug becomes hardened. The mixture used to form the plugs may contain besides the sand the following parts by weight: 3-5% sodium silicate, 5-6% powdered marl, and about 4% water. In a second embodiment 1.5-5% soluble sodium silicate is mixed with sand and moulded to form a tapered cylinder, which is subsequently treated with CO 2 to react with the sodium silicate and bond the sand. A blind hole 11 may be formed in the plug. Granular ceramic material may replace part of the sand. The plugs disintegrate, when forced into a borehole.
