716,479. Hardening soil. KEIL, K. F. Dec. 11, 1952, No. 31409/52. Class 68(1) Soils of low binding power such as sand, gravel or loess are consolidated by mixing the soil with up to 30 per cent of its weight of clay or bentonite of high binding power, with up to 12 per cent of its weight of water glass and with one or more hydratizing chemicals such as sodium carbonate or ammonium phosphate, sufficient water being added to form a pasty mass which hardens in a short time to an insoluble, plastic mass. The treated soil can be used as an impermeable packing for coffer dams or embankments, the paste being poured into the space to be filled to harden in situ. To provide a consolidated surface for a road, the materials are sprayed and scattered over the surface and raked in to the required depth.
