[Also in Divisions F1 and H2] In a switching arrangement for a garbage disposal unit having electric-motor drive, the electric motor circuit has two switches, one of which is a diaphragm switch 16 in a housing 18 actuated by a pressure or vacuum generator 9, Fig. 2, connected to the diaphragm switch by a conduit 12 having a port which is closed by a valve 6 when the sink plug 4 is in the partly raised position. To start the motor the sink water tap is turned on and an automatic valve closes a switch in the motor circuit and plug 4 is then slightly withdrawn to expose the water holes and to close valve 6 thus hermetically sealing pipe 12. A rubber pressure generator 9 is then squeezed expelling air through spring-closed valve 13. On release of generator 9, valve 13 is closed and the vacuum which is created in pipe 12 and diaphragm switch 16 closes contacts 17 to start the motor. Failure of the water supply or removal or closure of the plug 4 stops the motor either by directly breaking the electrical circuit or by air admission to pipe 12 thus causing the diaphragm switch 16 to open contacts 17. The pneumatic system may operate by pressure and an automatic time delay, e.g. a capillary orifice 11 or a valve may be associated with the generator 9. A suction cup 9a allows the pressure generator to be secured to a suitable surface.
