Abstract

988,540. Conducting liquid switches; protective arrangements. J. RICHTR, J. HERAL, and J. CERKL. Feb. 14, 1962, No. 5593/62. Headings H2B and H2K. A high-voltage short-circuiting device comprises a hollow body 1 containing conductive anti-freeze liquid 5, a piston 14 and a removable casing 2 which contains an explosive charge 3 and an electric igniter 4. When the charge 3 is fired, the piston 14 is forced upwards to expel the liquid through an aperture on to a spaced electrode (not shown) so providing a conductive path from the electrode to the body 1 which is earthed through its supporting structure. The device is provided with foils 6, 7 to avoid the penetration of moisture. It may be used to protect a transformer, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), in which case the operation of the transformer protective gear ignites the explosive charge and the device then short-circuits the power supply to earth and causes fuses to blow to disconnect the transformer. The Specification also refers to the use of the device in providing a short duration earth on a disconnected line in a system having single-pole reclosure, and to its use in short-circuit testing.
