Abstract
972,021. Conducting fluid switches; protective arrangements. J. RICHTR, J. CERKL, and V. JELINEK. Feb. 6, 1962, No. 4683/62. Headings H2B and H2K. A high-voltage short-circuiting device 12 comprises an earthed electrode 5, Fig. 3, an insulating member 7, a pressure-resisting chamber 1, and a replaceable cartridge 8 sealed by a foil 3 and containing an electric ignition fuse 4 and an explosive charge 2 to which a substance promoting ionization is added. When the charge is ignited, the ionized jet passing through the electrode 5 provides a conducting path between the electrode 5 and a high voltage electrode 6. The substance added to the charge 2 may be metallic filings. Fig. 2 shows an arrangement in which a transformer 13 is supplied through an isolator 10 and a fuse 11. In the event of a transformer fault, protective gear associated with the transformer energizes the fuse 4 of a device 12 which establishes a short circuit to earth so causing the fuse 11 to blow and interrupt the supply to the transformer. Alternatively, the supply may be interrupted by a circuit-breaker. Fig. 1 (not shown). The Specification also refers to the use of the device in providing a short duration earth on a disconnected line in a system having single-pole reclosure, and to its use in short-circuit testing.
