Abstract

[Also in Division B7] A vehicle rear view mirror hinge mounting comprises a base 2 securable by a stud 5 and nut 4 to the vehicle wing 3, a stanchion 1 to support the mirror head rotatable on the base and a helical compression spring 15 urging rings of radial indexing serrations 19 on both the base and the stanchion into engagement, mating annular surfaces 20 on the base and stanchion extending around the rings of serrations but disposed in a plane which does not pass through the serrations, the spring being wholly accommodated within a cylindrical chamber formed in the base and having a cylindrical wall portion 7 projecting into a cylindrical recess in the stanchion. The wall portion 7 has a flange 8 through which passes a pivot stem 9 secured to the stanchion. The spring 15 is disposed between the flange 8 and a retainer ring 16 held by a pin 17 passing through the stem. A spring clip may replace the pin 17 and engage in a groove around the stem. The cylindrical wall 7 and flange 8 may be replaced by an arcuate wall fitting into a corresponding recess in the stanchion.
