Abstract
988,246. Wells &c. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 17, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 25855/61. Heading E1F. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for guiding equipment 38 to a subaqueous well, or to a predetermined position within a body of water, comprises a platform or vessel located above the well or position, a base 18 fixed at the well or position guide cables 32,- -34 extending from the platform or vessel to the base, and remotely operable disconnectible latching means 35, 36 connecting the cables to the base. The cables are secured to hold down members 35 fixed within posts 21,- -23 on the base, and the equipment has bosses such as 43, 44 slidable on the cables. Each cable carries a latch 36 having a body 36b carrying dogs 46, 47. The dogs are expanded by springs 53, 54 to engage a member 35, and are retracted by moving a rod 57 having a weight bar 37 upwardly. Normally the rod is fixed to the body by balls 60, 61, a tube 50 being dropped down the cable to move a shell 58 and free the rod from the balls so that tension on the cable retracts the dogs to permit the cable to be raised. If the dogs fail to retract the cable tension is increased to break the rod at 65 to permit the cable to be removed, and the latch body to fall away from the member 35. In a modification each latch is held in a depression at the top of a post, and the weight bar carries a cover which is removed by shearing pins before the tube is dropped. In a further modification inwardly directed dogs engage the underside of a knob at the top of each post, and are retracted when the tube is dropped after a cover is removed.
