Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0987922/C2/1> where X is an anilino group substituted in the ring by -SO2C (where C is a straight or branched alkyl group substituted by a water-solubilizing group such as OH or COOH), and W is a group as for X or is chlorine, an amino group substituted by one or two aliphatic groups, or the residue of an aromatic or heterocyclic amine free from ionizing or chromophoric substituents; alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts thereof; and their production by reacting a compound in which X and W are Cl, with an -SO2C substituted aniline to give a product in which (i) all chlorines are replaced by the CSO2C6H4NH- group, or (ii) two chlorines are replaced by such a group; the remaining chlorines may then be replaced by reaction with an appropriate amine; in each case salts may be prepared if desired. Reaction is preferably effected in an aqueous medium. Specified anilines are R(CH2)nSO2C6H4NH2-1,4, where R is OH or COOH and n is 1 or 2. Specified amines for reaction are methylamine, ethylamine, propylamine, dimethylamine, diethylamine, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, morpholine, aniline, anisidines, toluidines and piperidine. Specified amines for salt formation are alkylamines, alkanolamines and morpholine. The compounds of the invention are textile whitening agents (see Division D1).ALSO:Cellulosic materials, such as textile materials and paper, are whitened by treatment with a compound of the formula <FORM:0987922/D1-D2/1> where X is an anilino group substituted in the ring by a group -SO2C (where C is a straight or branched alkyl radical substituted by a water-solubilising group such as OH or COOH), and W is a group as for X, or is chlorine, an amino group substituted by one or two aliphatic groups, or the residue of an aromatic or heterocyclic amine free from ionising or chromophoric substituents; or a salt thereof.
