Abstract
987,238. Travelling-wave tubes. SIEMENS & HALSKE A.G. Oct. 25, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 38234/61. Heading H1D. A travelling - wave tube comprises in succession along a common axis an electron gun, an electrode 8 extending along and surrounding the said axis, and a collector, wherein a helically wound delay line 6 is coaxial with the electrode 8 and is located between the electrode and the axis, and wherein an electron beam 10 is caused to follow a helical path coaxial with the delay line, the beam being electrostatically focused and guided in a manner such that it interacts with an electromagnetic wave travelling along the delay line along substantially the whole length thereof. The delay line is interdigitated with limbs 3 having a rectangular, triangular or circular cross-section, and the electrode 8 may be constructed so that the radial distance between the electrode and the interaction spaces between adjacent limbs of the delay line is greater than that between the electrode and the limbs, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). Extensions 11, 12 may be provided on the electrode 8 to assist in focusing and guiding the beam 10, which is preferably of rectangular cross-section. The collector consists of a number of electrodes maintained at different potentials so that the energy of the electrons upon collection is a minimum.
