Abstract
1,227,622. Travelling-wave tubes. A. M. ALEXEENKO, J. D. SAMORODOV, and A. S. TAGER. 8 April, 1968, No. 16722/68. Heading H1D. In an electrostatically focused backwardwave travelling-wave tube having a slow-wave structure incorporating a plurality of apertured fingers spaced along and projecting into the electron stream, each finger is provided with a plurality of beam-passage apertures, whereby the stream progresses down the tube in the form of a corresponding plurality of beams, and electrostatic focusing is provided by the application of different potentials to alternate fingers. As shown, the slow-wave structure is of interdigitated type, formed of two combs 12 and 12<SP>1</SP>, the fingers 7 of which are provided with a set of parallel slots 8, comb 12 being conductively connected to the tube envelope, and comb 12<SP>1</SP> being insulated therefrom by members 11, and coupled to the output waveguide 4 and the wave absorber 5 by high frequency chokes 14. The stream emitted from the gun cathode 9 is split into a plurality of beams by a focusing electrode 10, which is apertured in a manner identical to that of the fingers and is held at or below cathode potential, and the first finger of comb 12 acts as the gun anode. The apertures are preferably slots, as shown-which slots may be interconnected by auxiliary slots to facilitate manufacture-but may alternatively be of circular, square or cruciform shape.
