Abstract
A sheet or pad, capable of being fused to a metal sheet by heating for the purpose of damping sound and vibrations of the metal sheet, comprises an intimate mixture of bitumen and/or a resinous sound-damping material, and a granular or powdery filler material, having on the side thereof remote from that side which is to contact the metal sheet a layer of a material which is sufficiently resistant to a hydrocarbon solvent to prevent the solvent from leaching out the bitumen and/or resinous constituents of the sound damping material when a metal sheet to which the sheet or pad is adhered is dipped or immersed in a bath of the solvent for a short time. The sound-damping material may comprise a coumarone, indene, coumarone-indene, styrene-indene, or cyclopentadiene resin, a resin derived from homologues of such a resin, or a mixture thereof with, if necessary, a plasticizer or softener. The filler material, which may be present up to 5 parts by weight per part of resin and/or bitumen may be clay, mica, whiting, slate powder, sand, barytes, talc, ground asbestos, ground granite, silica, carbon black, wood flour or cork. The thin layer of solvent-resistant material may have a dry weight of between 4 and 7 grammes per square foot, may be prefabricated and applied to the layer of sound-damping material, e.g. paper or p regenerated cellulose film, or formed on the layer of sound-damping material by depositing thereon a film either from a solution or a dispersion, e.g. rubber latex dispersion with or without vulcanizing ingredients, or a synthetic resinous material such as polyvinyl acetate or chloride, butadiene-acrylonitrile, butadiene-styrene, or a copolymer of vinyl acetate and alkyl maleate.
