Abstract

Moulding material contains 30-95% bitumen and 5-70% of an ethylene copolymer. The bitumen has penetration 10-210 and may have R and B softening point of 37-72 DEG C., and may be asphaltic bitumen, petrolene, malthene, asphaltene or pyrobitumen, natural or obtained by petroleum distillation. The ethylene copolymer is of 30-97% ethylene and 70-3% vinyl ester or esters and/or copolymerizable acrylic and/or methacrylic compounds. Such compounds may be acrylic or methacrylic acids and their esters, and amides and nitriles which may bear substituents on the N atom. Many examples are given. Other ethylenically unsaturated compounds exemplified may additionally be present in the copolymer. The copolymers used have melt indices of 0.1-100. The moulding material may be applied molten to surfaces which are preferably preheated and which may be primed, e.g. with bitumen emulsion. Fillers, e.g. wood flour, carbon black, diatomaceous earth, kaolin, quartz powder, stone chips, sand, glass fibres, mineral wool, rubber powder, wool felt, jute, or synthetic fibres, may be present. A composition may contain, e.g. 5-70% by weight, with reference to bitumen and copolymer, of filler of particle diameter 0.01-0.09 mm.; or there may be present, with reference to the total weight of the composition, e.g. 4-10% bitumen, 2-10% copolymer, 6-20% mineral filler of particle diameter 0.01-0.09 mm., and 60-88% of mineral filler of particle diameter of 0.09-20 mm.
