Abstract

Asphalt is obtained from a solvent-deasphalting petroleum refining process. In a countercurrent treating tower in which asphaltic residuum flows downwards and liquid propane flows upwards, the top tower temperature is 130-200 DEG F. at 200-500 p.s.i., 2.5-15.0 volumes of propane are used per volume of residuum. Rheometric values of the asphalt are given.ALSO:A composition comprises asphalt and 1-50% based on the asphalt of a solid ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer resin, and includes sand, fullers earth, and asphalt roofing scraps. The asphalt may be natural, or derived from petroleum refining operations, e.g. vacuum distillation, solvent extraction and/or oxidation. The asphalt may have R and B softening point 150-350 DEG F., pen (77 DEG F.) 0-5 (50 g., 5 sec.), and ductility 0-3 cm., and may contain 10-40 vol per cent asphaltenes and 20-50% resins, the remainder being oil. The copolymer contains 5-15 moles ethylene per mole vinyl acetate. The asphalt roofing scraps are composed of felt, asphalt or tar and mineral aggregate. The composition may be made by heating the asphalt to 200-500 DEG F., and slowly adding the resin with stirring. The other ingredients may then be blended into the hot mix. The process may be performed continuously. Fillers and extenders include clays, mineral aggregates, cement, asbestos, vermiculite and/or glass fibres. 1-10 parts by weight of filler may be used per part asphalt/resin. The composition may be moulded into blocks, slabs and rods.
