Abstract
<PICT:0985918/C6-C7/1> Aluminium and its alloys are treated with a mixture of nitrogen and chlorine introduced below the surface of the molten metal to remove occluded gases and bring solid inclusions to the surface. As shown, a mixture of 1-30% chlorine and 99-30% nitrogen is fed into the molten metal through a tube 11 which passes through a cap 14. The atmosphere above the metal and within the cap may be flushed by the same gas mixture through a pipe 15, the waste gas escaping through a hole 19. It is stated that little magnesium is removed from aluminium alloys containing magnesium.
