Abstract

985,759. Life saving vessel. R. P. VEEN. March 23, 1961 [March 23, 1960; Nov. 28, 1960], No. 10770/61. Headings B7A and B7M. A one-man life-saving vessel comprises a cylindrical body 2 divided into two compartments by a wall 10 extending along the cylinder, one compartment 12 having a hatchway 4 or the like opening into it and being designed to receive and carry only a single person, and the other compartment comprising a ballast tank 8 having an aperture or apertures 16 through its outer wall to allow the ingress of water, the arrangement being such that when the ballast tank is full of water the vessel floats with the hatchway facing upwardly with or without the presence of a person in the vessel. The ingress of water into the tank 8 may be automatic or manually controlled, in Fig. 2 manually controlled vent valves 14 are used. A partial lining 6 of, e.g., expanded polystyrene in disposed in the compartment 12 and may be used in conjunction with an air-filled mattress. A waterproof skin may be welded around the hatchway and adapted to fit around the part of the occupant's body projecting through the hatchway. More than one ballast tank can be provided.
