Abstract

Synthetic upholstery fibrous stuffing material consisting of linear condensation polyester e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, fibres having a denier per filament of 25-45, a length of 3-8 inches and 3-10 crimps per inch with a crimp index (I) of 5-25% is made by normal spinning and drawing of filaments, mechanical crimping, stapling by cutting and carding. I is equal to (Ls-Lc)/Ls x 100, where Ls is the straightened length of the fibre under a tension just sufficient to remove the crimp and Lc is the length of the crimped fibre under no tension. The "bulk retention" of the material (stated to be "at least 65%") is measured by a test which includes subjecting a filled structure to a repeated cycle of compression and load release.
