Abstract

A web of random loosely laid fibres is impregnated with a resin by passing the web between a pair of compacting rollers, to one of which a resin-containing liquid is applied, the surface of at least the other roller being roughened. Alternatively the resin containing liquid may be applied to both rollers. Thermo-setting resins, such as phenol formaldehyde dissolved for example in ethyl alcohol, and organic, hydrophilic fibres, such as cotton or other cellulosic fibres, are particularly suitable for the process. To prevent the web sticking to the roughened roller a solvent for the resin, or a liquid that wets the fibres, may be applied to the roughened surface. This surface may be knurled or may comprise a wire mesh suitably secured around and to a smooth roller. A doctor knife or roller is preferably used to limit or control the amount of resin-containing liquid applied to the web by the roller. The impregnated web may be dried, cut into suitable sizes or shapes and a stack of the pieces so obtained moulded under heat and pressure to give a laminated product, e.g. a gear wheel.
