Abstract

[Also in Divisions C1 and D1] A sheet of carbon fibre reinforced resin is prepared by laying up tows of carbon fibre in generally parallel array against at least one layer or film of resin matrix material, flattening the resin and carbon fibre together to a desired thickness by the application of a rolling pressure in the general direction of fibre alignment and simultaneously applying heat in the region of the pressure application to soften the resin. The resin film may be laid on a platten or sheet from which it easily parts, the tows of carbon fibre may be aligned on the resin film, a second resin film positioned over the aligned tows and a heated roller under spring-pressure or at a desired distance from the platten passed along the second film in the general direction of the fibres. The second resin film may be substituted by a sheet of parting agent or parting agent treated material. In a preferred embodiment, one side of each of two sheets of paper which have been treated with parting agent are sprayed or otherwise coated with a resin and hardener diluted with a solvent, the solvent is allowed to evaporate and tows of carbon fibre in generally parallel array are laid up on the resin coated side of one of the sheets. The resin treated side of the other sheet is placed on top of the fibre layer to form a laminate, which is flattened and the resin softened by rolling and heating. Elimination of the solvent may be encouraged by heating, e.g. in an oven, at a temperature below the curing temperature of the resin. The sheets of paper may then be removed from the laminate. The resin used may be an epoxy resin, a polyester resin, a polyimide, a phenolic or a Friedel Crafts type resin, a preferred resin coating being 50% by wt. epoxy resin, with acetone solvent and an additional 4% of hardener. At least one pair of rollers may be used to apply the rolling pressure. A laminated article may be produced by laying several of the sheets so produced upon one another, e.g. on a mandrel or in a mould, and curing the resin content by application of heat.
