In a machine for back washing wool sliver a guide roller 6 is mounted adjacent the final washing roller 4 in the washing solution 2 so that slivers pass directly from the final roller to the guide roller and are supported by the rollers until they pass substantially horizontally from the guide roller 6 to the squeeze rollers 11, 12. In the form shown in which two identical washing arrangements are mounted in tandem, the guide roller 6 is mounted in self aligning bearings on slotted brackets 8 adjustably mounted on arms 9 which can swing about a fixed shaft to, the position of guide roller 6 is thus adjustable relative to roller 4. The roller 6, which may be driven, is preferably pressed against roller 4 to expel liquid from the slivers.
