984,308. Machine tool details. JOHN ACKWORTHIE Ltd. Oct. 18, 1963 [Oct. 18, 1962; May 22, 1963], Nos. 39387/62 and 20300/63. Headings B3B, B3C and B3N. A drilling or tapping machine comprises a rotary indexable work-table, having a number of circumferentially spaced work-holders, each of which is automatically opened to release the work at an unloading station, and automatically closed on a new workpiece at a loading station. The machine has a base 1, the worktable 2 indexed by a device 3, and drilling or tapping heads 5. The work-table 2 carries a plate 6 on which is mounted the work-holders 8. Each work-holder comprises a pair of arms 10, having semi-circular jaws 12 clamped therein by screws 14, the arms being pivoted in a block 15 at 16. Screws 20 in the arms are urged into engagement with a cam 19 by a spring 21, and the cam is carried by a vertical spindle 22, the lower end of which is connected to a lever 24 urged by a spring 25 to close jaws 12. Spindle 22 is fitted with an arm 27 having a follower roller 28 which co-operates with a cam 30, associated with a pneumatic or hydraulic piston 31. The cam 30 is pivotally mounted in a fixed bracket 32 at 34, to permit of limited angular movement, and a pin 36 on the cam rests in contact with the head 37 of piston 31. The loading position is marked A, Fig. 2, the unloading position is marked B, and the workholder at C is approaching position B. In operation, roller 28 of the work-holder at C engages face 35 of cam 30, and as the work-holder moves to position B, the roller rides up on the cam and causes cam 19 and spring 21 to open jaws 12. There is a dwell period between positions B and A, and at the latter position cam 30 is moved a small angular amount by piston 31, thus disengaging roller 28 from cam 30, and jaws 12 are closed. The energization of piston 31 is controlled in synchronism with indexing device 3, and the workpiece may be ejected at position B by a plunger 43, also operating in synchronism with device 3. The workpieces may be automatically supplied from a hopper or shoot. Specification 957,930 is referred to.
