Abstract
984,066. Ball projectors. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. (AUST.) PTY Ltd. Nov. 11, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1962], No. 44389/63. Heading A6D. A ball projector comprises a throwing tube 11 mounted at the free end of a shaft 31 extending laterally from the upper end of a pilar 21 on a wheeled frame 16. The shaft 31, together with the tube 11, is rotated by a motor mounted on the frame, the speed of rotation being variable by means of a handle 41, operation of which alters the effective diameter of a variable diameter pulley in the transmission system between the motor and the shaft 31. Balls are fed into the tube via apertures 45 and 44 in the frame and tube respectively, and are retained therein by a rod 47 on one side of the aperture 44, and a pivotally mounted arm 48 mounted on the tube on the other side of said aperture. The arm 48 is normally held by a spring-urged catch 53 (also mounted on the tube 11) in the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein an extension 49 of the arm projects through a slot in the wall of the throwing tube, to retain a ball in place therein. In order to release the catch and thereby free the ball for projection from the tube, an extension 57 of the catch cooperates, as the tube 11 rotates, with a projection 59 which is carried by a cylinder 61 slidably and rotatably mounted on a stub shaft extending laterally from the pillar 21, the cylinder being moved at will relative to the stub shaft by manipulation of the handle 62. Thus by means of the handle 62 the projection 59 may be slid into and out of the path of the catch extension 57, and may be rotated relative to the stub shaft to alter the angle of projection. A finger 77, and adjustable plates 74, 75 are provided at the outlet end of the throwing tube to vary the pin imparted to the projected ball. The pillar 21 preferably comprises two relatively rotatable coaxial tubes so that the direction of projection may be varied, and the coaxial tubes may be telescopic to provide a means of varying the height of the apparatus.
