substantially perpendicularly related to the plane of pull of the saw.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this kind embodying the use of a circular saw mounted in -a manner to have pull in a constant straight line or plane, together with means for rotating the saw at all times during its plane movement.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved swinging cut-oil saw whereby certain important advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view in side elevation of a swinging cut-ofi saw constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a portion being broken away, and certain of the parts being indicated in a second position by broken lines;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially f on the line 2--2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a view in front elevation;
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a detailed sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, my improved apparatus comprises a base B of desired dimensions and configuration and includin an upstanding tubular post I of desired length. This post I has threading from above into the bore thereof an elongated shank 2 provided at its upper end with a beveled gear it. This gear 3 is in swiveled connection, as at 4, with an upstanding'collar 5 carried by a bottom cross member 6 comprised in a relatively large frame F preferably of cast metal. The shank 2 extends through this bottom 6, and depending from this member 6 is an elongated sleeve 1 which snugly and telescopically engages over the post I so that upon requisite turning movement of the shank 2 the frame F can be raised or lowered within certain limits. The frame F includes the suitably designed side members or plates 8. together with ya top cross member 9. The lower portions of the side members or plates 8, as herein disclosed, are of increased width, as indicated at It. Rotatably disposed through and supported by the lower portion of one of the side members or plates 8 is a shaft II; This shaft ll extends inwardly of the frame F and the inner or inserted end thereof carries a beveled gear I 2 in mesh with the gear 3 hereinbefore referred to. The outer end portion of the shaft II is provided with a crank l4 whereby the shaft l I may be manually rotated in the direction desired to rotate the shank 2 to either raise or lower the frame F.
The lower portion of the post I, as herein 'disclosed, is provided therearound with a fixed collar l5 having on its periphery the degree indications IS with which coacts an elongated index or pointer I! carried by and depending from the sleeve 1. This eoactionof the index or pointer II with the indications l6 permits a ready and convenient determination of the angle in which the widened portion Ill of the frame F is disposed or more particularly to determine the direction of travel or pull of the saw S to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
Y 1 may be contracted to tightly engage around the post I and thereby hold or lock the frame F at its desired adjustment around the post and as selectively determined by the coaction of thepointer or index IT with the indications Hi. The upper portion of the side members 8 of the frame F have interposed therebetween and supported thereby a pivot member or bar 2|. In pivotal connection with this member or bar 2| is the upper end portion of a depending and relatively wide swinging member 22. Also in pivotal connection with the member or bar 2| is the inner or rear end portion of a second relatively wide swinging member '23. This member 23 extends forwardly with respect to the frame F and is of desired length and has its outer or forward extremity pivotally connected, as at 2|, with the upper end portion of a relatively wide swinging member 25. This member 25 depends from the member 23 and passes between the forward part fixed while the pivotal connections 24, 26 and 28 are free.
The lower member 21, at a desired point intermediate its ends, is provided at its opposite sides with the outstanding trunnions 29 which carry the rollers 30 riding or travelling in the trackways 3| provided by the suitably spaced and parallel flanges 32 carried by and disposed transversely of the side members 8 of the frame F and extending inwardly of said frame. The
trunnions 29 and the rollers 30 provide parts coacting with the trackways 3| and which serve as fulcrums to allow the lower member 21 to have rocking movement as the trunnions 29 and rollers 30 travel along the trackways 3|. The trackways 3| are at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the post I or the shank 2 threading within said post.
The lower end of the member 25 is continued by the downwardly disposed extension arm 33 of desired length and which is herein disclosed as of a width considerably less than the width of the member 25 and positioned substantially at the transverse center thereof. The lower end portion of this arm 33 carries a transversely disposed bearing 34 through which is directed a rotatably supported shaft 35. This shaft 35 extends a desired distance beyond each end of the bearing 34 and mounted upon one end portion of the shaft 35 for rotation therewith is a circular saw S hereinbefore referred to and which saw may be of such radius as required. The bearing 34 rigidly carries a guard structure 36 which houses the upper portion of the saw S, and this guard structure 33 carries an inwardly directed hand hold 31 which may be readily grasped by the operator for imposing the desired pull or movement to the saw S with respect to the work. It is believed to be obvious that this pull or movement of the saw S due to the mounting of the members 22, 23, 25 and 21 is such that the saw will move in a constant straight line or plane through the work and not travel in an arc. The end portion of the shaft 35 remote from the saw S carries a pulley 38 with which engages an endless belt 39, preferably of V-shape, and which belt is also engaged around a pulley 40 carried by the drive shaft 4| of the motor M mounted upon and carried by the member 25. This motor M is of an electric type and is adapted to be connected with a suitable source of electrical energy in the usual way.
It is to be stated that the base B if desired may be bolted or otherwise fixedly secured to a bench or other support or can be free of such connection to allow the device to be portable. It is also believed to be obvious that the device or apparatus as herein disclosed can be used with equal facility within a shop or on outside construction work.
From the foregoing description it is thought tobe obvious that a swinging cut-off saw constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim: I
1. A saw mechanism comprising a suitably supported frame, a rigid member having its upper portion pivotally connected with the frame, an upper and second rigid member having an end portion pivotally connected with the frame, a lower and third rigid member pivotally connected with the first member, said second and third members being disposed in the same generaldirection away from the first member, another and fourth rigid member pivotally connected with the outer end portions of the second rigid member and the third rigid member, a trackway carried by.the frame, the third rigid member having a part extending within said trackway, said trackway being straight, an arm extending from the lower end of the last-named and fourth rigid member, and a saw carried by the lower portion of said arm.
2. A saw mechanism comprising a suitably supported frame, a rigid member having its upper portion pivotally connected with the frame, an upper and'second rigid member having an end portion pivotally connected with the frame, a lower and third rigid member pivotally connected with the first member, said second and third members being disposed in the same general direction away from the first member, another and fourth rigid member pivotally connected with the outer end portions of the second rigid member and the third rigid member, a trackway carried by the frame, the third rigid member having a part extending within said trackway, said trackway being straight, an arm extending from the lower end of the last-named and fourth rigid member, a shaft for a circular saw carried by the lower portion of the arm, and means carried by the last-named and fourth rigid member and operatively engaged with the shaft for rotating the shaft.
