Abstract

764,841. Knitting. VERWALTUNGSGES DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Dec. 20, 1954 [March 30, 1954], No. 36774/54. Class 74 (2). [Also in Group XX] In a machine in which a needle beard can be dressed in two mutually perpendicular planes, an illuminated image of the beard 6a of the needle 6 is superimposed on the enlarged silhouette of the needle, cast on a screen 4 bearing a drawing of a correctly-shaped needle, by episcopic projection, as by mirrors 8 which reflect part of the silhouette-forming beam on to the beard, or by a separate illuminator, the plane containing needle stem and beard being perperpendicular to the screen. A suitably proportioned rectangular colour filter on the condenser lens 2 and a rectangular slit in a diaphragm 7 ensure that the silhouette-forming part of the beam shall be coloured whilst the light falling on the mirrors remains white. The needle is held in a chuck comprising a generally cylindrical body 30 pedally rotatable about its axis through 90 degrees as required through a pulley 37 and cord 38, and a jaw 32 bearing a pivoted clamping piece 33. The jaw 32 is housed in a bifurcation at one end of an axially slidable rod 31, being connected thereto by a lost motion device comprising a pin 44 sliding in an inclined slot 43 in the jaw. As the jaw reaches its forward, clamping position, it abuts against a pin 35 positioned slightly above the centre line, so that it is rocked, and thus the movement of the clamping piece down on to or away from the needle stem is without sliding on it. The dressing device comprises jaws 12, 13, opened and closed by the rotation of segments 16, 17 containing arcuate grooves 19, 30 in which move pins 12b, 13b on the jaws. When segment 16 is turned, it carries segment 17 with it, so that both jaws are moved, but turning of segment 17 moves jaw. 12 only. The segments rotate in a guide piece 15 rotatably mounted in a carriage 14 slidable on two bars 11 parallel to the needle axis and fixed to a vertically slidable plate: the degrees of freedom necessary for the manipulation of the jaws are thus provided.
