Abstract

Road surfaces are made by a process in which a monomeric, polymerizable liquid is mixed with an aggregate and a particulate solid polymer which is swellable or soluble in the monomeric liquid, the composition is spread upon the sub-surface before the polymer particles are swelled through by the liquid, thereafter the composition is hardened by a polymerization accelerator. In one embodiment a composition of aggregate, filler, polymethyl methacrylate and the oxidizing part of a redox catalyst is mixed with methyl methacrylate and glycol dimethacrylate containing chlorinated naphthalene, trichloroethyl phosphate and dimethyl-p-toluidine as the reducing part of the catalyst, spread upon a road sub-surface and left to harden at ambient temperature. In a modification the monomeric composition is sprayed on to a road surface, the aggregate/polymer composition is applied, further monomer is sprayed on and the whole mass is topped with a layer of aggregate. The polymer/aggregate composition may also be mixed with the monomer in a bag and applied to the surface through a slit. The filler which may be present in the aggregate may be kaolin, chalk or quartz which may be surface-treated with zinc stearate. Additional polar monomers may also be present.
