Abstract

A particulate thermoplastic is coloured by treating it with a suspension or soln. of a colourant in an inert solvent in which a binder is dissolved. During or after the treatment the solvent evaporates and the thermoplastic particles become coated with the binder in which the colourant is dispersed. The binder is a combination of a soft and wetting resin and a hard resin, both resins being thermally stable and soluble in the solvent. The resin combination in the binder allows a wider variety of thermoplastics to be coloured and he concn. of the colourant to be increased so that masterbatches can be prepd. The binder coating also improves the mechanical strength and thermal stability of the thermoplastic material as well as other props. e.g. impermeability to fluids, thermosealing characteristics, etc.
