Abstract
A particulate submerged arc welding flux comprises a matrix of 9-12% MnO, 6-10% Al2O3, 20-24% MgO, 46-54% SiO2, 3-5% CaF, and up to 0.5% anhydrous sodium silicate with 0.7-2% of a metallic deoxidizer dispersed through the matrix in the form of a metal mist. The flux is made by fusing together a mixture of 50% talc (MgO.SiO2), 15% silica sand, 21.8% ferromanganese slag (Al2O3.MnO.SiO2) and 7.7% ferrovanadium slag (MgO.Al2O3) and adding either before fusion or as a late furnace addition a mixture of 3.4% CaF2 and 2.1% FeSi. To ensure good mixing in fusion the talc used is a gas evolving talc MgO.SiO2. CO2, 46% being added to the initial charge and 4% with the late additions. The melt is water cast.
