Abstract
A method of manufacturing a flux composition for welding comprises mixing the finely ground flux-ingredients with a powdered fused glaze composition, heating the mixture to a temperature sufficiently high to cause fusion of the glaze composition but below that at which interfusion of the flux ingredients would occur, cooling and reducing the resultant mass to free flowing granules. The fused glaze composition is a vitreous material of the type used for glazing ceramics, made by fusing a mixture of three or more metal oxides with silica and optionally with one or more metal fluorides, or by fusing two or more metal oxides with silica and boric oxides and optionally with one or more metal fluorides. Oxides of lithium, titanium, sodium, potassium, calcium, aluminium, boron and barium are disclosed as the glaze oxides. Silicates or titanates of calcium, magnesium, aluminium, manganese, titanium, iron, barium, chromium and zirconium or their components are used as fluxing agents. Killing agents such as ferro-manganese, ferro-silicon and ferro-titanium; fluorides of calcium, sodium and aluminium; and substances to alloy with the weld, such as ferro-manganese, ferro-chromium, ferro-molybdenum, ferro-vanadium, nickel powder &c., may also be added. Carbon may be added as powder or as a carbide.
