983,184. Moulding cups from clay. STAFFORDSHIRE POTTERIES (HOLDINGS) Ltd. (Battelle-Institut e-V.). June 18, 1962 [July 3, 1961], No. 23931/61. Heading B5A. Thin-walled hollow articles such as cups with integral handles are moulded from clay slip by pressing and vibrating the slip at low frequencies between non-rotating male and female formers 44, 34. The female former is raised and clay 18 (Fig. 1) present in the former is subjected to pressure and vibration and forced upwards into the space 20 between the two formers 16, 11, Fig. 1, thus forming the cup with handle. When the female former is lowered the slip solidifies and retains its shape. The female former, one of many on a rotating platform, is rotated one step and the cup is trimmed. Warm air is passed over the cup to dry it during the next 15 succeeding rotations and then is removed on the 16th rotation after the female former is opened. On the 17th rotation clay slip is placed in the former and on the 19th rotation the cup is again formed by pressing and vibration. In a modification the male former is lowered into the female former.
