Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0982946/C2/1> (wherein each R1 is a hydrogen atom or a C2-6 alkanoyl radical and R2 is a straight-chain C1-5 alkyl radical) and non-toxic acid-addition salts of the compounds in which each R1 is a hydrogen atom by heating an a -(straight-chain C1-5 alkyl)- b - (2,3 - dimethoxyphenyl) - alanine with a concentrated aqueous solution of a strong mineral acid, optionally followed by conversion of the resulting salt to the free base, and the preparation of the compounds in which each R1 is a C2-6 alkanoyl radical by acylation of a -methyl - b - (2, 3 - dihydroxyphenyl)alanine or its hydrobromide and separation of the resulting mixture of the desired product and the corresponding N - acyl - a - methyl - b - (2,3 - diacyloxyphenyl) alanine. The compounds of the invention are anti-hypertensive agents and may be administered orally or parenterally in the form of pharmaceutical preparations (e.g. tablets, capsules, aqueous suspensions and sterile solutions) containing them together with a carrier.
