In a device comprising a monocrystalline semi-conductor body including a PN junction, that part of the surface at which the PN junction emerges is provided with a coating including a silicone and containing from 0.01 to 1% by weight elemental sulphur. The silicone may be a rubber, resin or paste. When silicone rubber is used it may be mixed with a small proportion of natural rubber vulcanized with sulphur. Inorganic fillers, e.g. mica, may be included in the coating which is applied to a thickness of 0.1 to 1 mm. at room temperature and subsequently heat cured if necessary. The Specification also refers to a known device comprising gold-silicon or gold-germanium alloy electrodes with connecting leads of silver, or of copper coated with silver or gold. Such devices are protected by a coating of a lowmelting glass comprising arsenic, sulphur and iodine or thallium.
