Abstract
A flexible non-metallic substrate such as paper or plastic is coated with tin in a vapour deposition process in which the tin is heated to above 1400 DEG C. in a vacuum, the rate of evaporation being in excess of 2 grams per minute per square inch of molten tin surface, and the tin coating is subsequently oxidized. The tin source is placed in a carbon crucible lined with molybdenum which may be applied by flame spraying. The source is preferably heated by induction and the outside of the crucible is insulated with a layer of carbon wool and a layer of a refractory oxide. To prevent oxidation of the tin source when the vacuum chamber is opened a cover and a source of nitrogen is provided for the crucible. The tin coating is oxidized by treating with hot moist air or with steam.
