Abstract

In the production of an electrical resistor, an insulating body is given an oxide coating by depositing under oxidizing conditions a fluid medium comprising a volatile or steam volatile tin compound and compounds of antimony and boron in a furnace at 500 DEG to 1000 DEG C. As described, a vitreous or ceramic body, e.g. porcelain, may be roughened by sand-blasting before being cleaned by immersion for one week in chromic acid which may be heated. The coating is applied by a vapour deposition or spraying stannic chloride, antimony trichloride and boric acid dissolved in hydrochloric acid in a furnace using an acid-resisting atomizing gun intermittently to minimize cooling. These compounds decompose in the presence of oxygen and water vapour to form the required oxides. One or more oxides of titanium, aluminium, barium, magnesium, silicon, zinc, manganese or cobalt may also be included. Tables giving changes in the ratio of the compounds in the coating medium expressed as oxides before and after application are given. It is stated that the coatings 100 to 10,000 Angstrom units thick should be protected by a moisture-proof lacquer.
