Abstract

982,180. Radio position and direction finding; aerial systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES AND CABLES Ltd. July 27, 1961, No. 27287/61. Headings H4A and H4D. An aerial system for a radio beacon or direction finding apparatus comprises two antennµ arranged one vertically above the other, the distance between them and the difference in length of couplings to a common feed point being chosen so that a lobe of one antenna pattern coincides with a null of the other. Aerials 1, 2 are so spaced and the feed paths 3, 4 so chosen that nulls of one radiation pattern due to reflection from the ground coincide with lobes of the other. The system operates by reducing ground reflections by providing an overall pattern in the absence of the ground which is largely above the horizon. Counterpoises may be placed below each aerial. The system is applicable to the radio beacons of Specifications 594,530 and 680,512 and the direction finding apparatus of Specification 899,951. In each case a second identical aerial system is placed vertically above the aerial system described in these Specifications and the aerials are fed typically 90 degrees out of phase. The aerials are spaced by from #/2 to #.
