982,095. Fuel elements. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 26, 1962 [Dec. 1, 1961], No. 43048/61. Heading G6C. A nuclear fuel container for use in a reactor core has a wall enclosing a fuel volume, the wall being formed of a material having a permeability in the order of 10<SP>-6</SP> cm<SP>2</SP>/sec., and having a vent through which pressure differences across the wall can equalize. The wall is preferably graphite, and the vent may be a hole of 0. 35 or 0. 55 mm dia. Pressure differences will arise during rapid heating or cooling of the fuel, or by sudden loss of gas coolant pressure externally of the fuel container. During steady state conditions in the core there will be no escape of radio-active fission product gases through the vent, and such gases will permeate the container giving a relaxation time similar to that of an unvented container. Gas will leave the container during start-up,but the concentration of fission product gases will be at a minimum at this time.
