Abstract
1,225,947. Reactor control rods. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 9 March, 1970 [7 March, 1969], No. 11174/70. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor control element, boron carbide is supported inside a container which is vented to permit the escape of helium produced by the reaction The rod is formed by the tube 10, containing carbide, 20 which is urged against the plate 18 by the spring 24. The helium, which collects in chamber 30, passes through the sintered nickel plug 46, along the screw threads 40 and out through the porous weld, 42. The plug 46 may be replaced by a ball valve. In further embodiments, coolant is permitted to enter the tube 10 either through porous plugs or through holes formed in the element casing.
