Abstract

Flooring tiles are made by mixing differently coloured granulates of vinyl synthetic resin under heat and pressure, forming the mass so produced into a mat having a thickness equal to two or more of the tiles, dividing the mat while still warm into slices each of which is the thickness of a tile, and subjecting each slice to a pressing operation. In an example, a composition comprising 100 parts of vinyl synthetic resin, 35 parts of a softener, 185 parts of a filler such as chalk and asbestos, and 4 parts of blue pigment, is gelatinised in a kneading machine at 170 DEG C. and is then crushed to a granulate having a grain size from 0 to 15 mm. The granulate is mixed in a mould with a similar granulate containing white pigment. The depth of the mould may vary from 4 to 30 mm, and the surface area may be 700 x 1000 mm. The granulates are then subjected to heat and pressure, e.g. 160 DEG C. and 50 kg per sq. cm. The mat so obtained is divided, while warm, on a band saw into sheets 2 mm thick. The sheets are subjected to pressure and are then stamped into flooring elements of any desired size and shape.
