Abstract

1,127,460. Tiles containing stone particles. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 7 Oct., 1966, No. 45058/66. Heading B5A. Tiles made from a mixture of a thermosetting resin and stone particles by compression moulding and heating to cure contain 7-25% preferably 10-12% by weight of resin and 93-75%, preferably 90-88% by weight of the stone particles, including particles of size greater than 100 US mesh and sufficient particles smaller than 100 US mesh to allow the particles to flow in the mould. The stone particles may have sizes in a series of progressively smaller size ranges, the particles in each smaller range being present in 30-45% by wt. of those in the above range. The stone mixture may also contain 8-10% clay and an imperfectly mixed pigment to add colour. In the example, silica and marble chips are used as the major part of the stone with minor amounts of barium sulphate and clay. The resin may be any suitable polymer-monomer combination which thermosets quickly to a resin of hardness comparable with that of the stone.
