Abstract

Artificial marble is prepared by mixing equal parts of any ordinary white cement and marble dust and adding thereto a powder having the composition 75 per cent calcium carbonate, 10 per cent calcium oxalate, 3 per cent borax and 12 per cent maize or starch, and allowing the product to set. The powder is preferably added in the proportion of 5 parts powder to 100 parts of marble dust cement mixture. Colour may be added if desired. In an example, a series of differently coloured masses are prepared of the above composition, and spread in layers of uneven thickness in a mould. When the mass has set it is cut into vertical strips. If the artificial marble is to be applied to a backing, the cutting is done before the set is complete and the material while slightly plastic is pressed on to the backing. Slabs for fireplaces ornamented by, e.g. rosettes &c., may also be moulded from the composition.
