Abstract

Polypropylene fibres are dyed by incorporating therein a phenolic thiophenolic or aromatic amine compound, treating the fibres with ozone and then grafting on to the fibres a polymer or copolymer which has affinity for dyes. The phenolic or aromatic amine compound is present in an amount of 0.001-2% on weight of the fibres, preferably 0.05-0.5%. Specified phenolic or amine compounds are, 2, 6 tertiary butyl-4-methyl phenol, dicresylolpropane, 2, 21 methylene bis(4-methyl 6-tertiary butyl phenol), N, N1 dinaphthyl-paraphenylene diamine, N, N1 diphenyl para phenylene diamine, thiophenol, 2, 21 thio bis (4-methyl 6 tertiary butyl phenol). The polymers used for grafting include acrylic and methacrylic acids and their derivatives, such as esters, nitriles, or amines, vinyl polymers especially vinyl pyridines.
