Abstract

The invention comprises chromium complexes of monoazo dyes having one atom of chromium in complex union with one molecular proportion of a monoazo dye and with one molecular proportion of a colourless organic compound which will form metal complexes with chromium, the said complexes being free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups, other than carboxylic acid groups in complex union with the chromium, and containing at least one reactive group (i.e. a group capable of reacting with nitrogen-containing textile material so that the dyestuff becomes bound to the said textile by a covalent bond). The dyes are prepared by reacting a 1 : 1-chromium complex of a monoazo dye with a colourless complex forming organic compound, the dye and the organic compound being free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups other than complex-forming carboxylic groups and together containing at least one reactive group. Alternatively, suitable unsymmetrical complexes containing at least one amino or hydroxyalkyl-sulphonyl group may be acylated with an acylating agent containing a reactive group. Specified reactive groups include chloro- and bromo-acetyl, acrylyl, b -chloropropionyl, a -and b -chloro-acrylyl, trichloroacrylyl, methacrylyl, di-chloro- or -bromo-triazinyl, amino-chloro-triazinyl, di-chloro- or -bromo-pyrimidyl, trichloropyrimidyl, cyano-dichloro-pyrimidyl and methylsulphonyloxyethyl - sulphonyl. Specified colourless complex forming compounds include salicyclic acid, 5-aminosalicylic acid, 8-hydroxyquinoline, catechol, o-aminophenol, 2-amino-3-naphthoic acid, phthalic acid and 5-amino-8-hydroxyquinoline. The dyes may be used to colour wool, silk, leather and synthetic polyamide, polyurethane and polyacrylonitrile fibres in a variety of shades.
